10 years ago, when I was 14, I arrived in this strange foreign land. Full of anticipation and anxiety.
I stepped out of the airport and the air smelt different. It was drizzling, and as much as I dislike rainy weather, I was enjoying the sensation of the rain on my skin. It didn’t feel like ordinary rain. It was a shower of euphoria!
It was my first time in an ‘ang moh’ country. Everything was new and exciting to me. The food tasted different, the supermarkets were huge, the people all looked so gorgeous, the beautiful cobble-stone streets and shops that close at 5pm!
The huge sausages, the different variety of cheeses, the houses and the sun that never seemed to set….. Wearing sweaters and barbecuing at the beach, breathing through our mouths just to see what happens when the warm air meets the cold, jumping up and down to keep ourselves warm….. Missing out on the changing of guards at city hall, just because we decided to have ice-cream instead and learning that one ‘kollap’ is actually two scoops of ice cream after we order two ‘kollaps’.
Memories.
I told myself, I must visit again, even if it is in my wildest dream.
And I think my dream might be coming true.
